In British Columbia, you can choose between government-subsidized long-term care and paying privately for care. Know that no matter which option you choose, you’ll benefit from around-the-clock nursing care and the attentive service of team members who will help you be your best.
Government-subsidized long-term care:
If you fit the eligibility criteria, the Ministry of Health may subsidize part of your costs for long-term care. Some important things to note:

There is a government waiting list. If you feel you need placement faster, you can use private-pay temporarily. It will not affect your place on the government-subsidized waiting list.

You will be expected to take the first residence with an available room. Failure to do so may result in you being deemed ineligible for government-subsidized long-term care.

There is a monthly cost of up to 80 per cent of your after-tax income. For more information, check our rates page.

Private-pay long-term care:
Private-pay long-term care services give you the chance to decide where you want to stay and when you want to move in. There are no criteria to determine your eligibility, and you don’t have to contact your health authority to get started. Everything is between you and the home of your choice.
Some important things to note:

Staying in a private-pay room will not affect your position on the government-subsidized long-term care waiting list.

There are no government waiting lists or eligibility criteria. Residences keep their own waiting lists, and it is often possible to move in immediately.

Services are not funded by the government and are dependent on market rates. You can contact your insurance company or veteran’s affairs. They may cover part of the costs.
